Welcome

Project ClayPlay is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of artists, local businesspersons and community members in Austin who know that art enriches people’s lives. We are transforming Airstream motorhomes into mobile clay studios, so that we can share the experience of art with economically challenged children in the greater Austin area, right in their own neighborhoods.

For children, especially, art can have a significant impact on health, learning, development and most important, self-esteem. Some children in the greater Austin area do not have access to arts activities, because of limited after-school programs; cuts in funding for arts education; or lack of transportation, time or money.

Several important people in my life inspired me to create Project ClayPlay. In 2005, after my older brother, Jim, passed away, I discovered how for 10 years he had taught high school students how to build Habitat for Humanity homes. (Read more about Jim here) In 2006, I had the opportunity to visit another important person in my life, Grif, who had been my home ec teacher in junior high school and never stopped believing in me. She reminded me that the best thing to do for my students is to “just love them.” Early in 2008, my longtime friend and fellow potter Fletcher Starbuck died. It reminded me that each of our lives is such a gift and sometimes ends far too soon.

There is no better time than now to move forward with our dreams!
