Fostering Creativity & Community through Clay

In November 2009, Project ClayPlay will hit the road with the first of two vintage 325 Airstream motorhomes converted into mobile pottery studios.
These vehicles allow us to take art-making opportunities to underserved populations in their own neighborhoods, such as summer parks programs, after-school programs, and evening programs at apartment complexes and neighborhood recreation centers.

Project Clayplay, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization was formed in 2008 with the primary focus of breaking down barriers faced by economically challenged kids–including transportation, money, facilities, and equipment–so they can learn to be creative, with clay and with their own lives. The instructors and volunteers of Project ClayPlay believe that art activities enrich people’s lives - stimulating their imaginations, enhancing fine motor skills, improving concentration, building self-esteem, and unleashing a general feeling of accomplishment that can be built upon in other aspects of their lives. Research repeatedly identifies the importance of arts education for childhood health, learning, and development. We are concerned with the budget cuts in funding for the arts in education, as well as the ever-expanding need for after-school programs. Transportation is often cited as a key barrier to participation in these programs.

We will also be taking the mobile pottery studios out to do birthday parties, scouting badges, corporate team building, and special events, with all profits from those efforts helping to fund our primary focus programs for economically challenged youth. This gives us an additional funding stream beyond grants and donations.
We still need help to fund the beginning of this project. We need clay, brushes, tools, books, glazes and underglazes, gas for the vehicle, and insurance for our teachers. Your generous donation is tax deductible, please donate today.
